The Role of a Medication Technician/Aide in Long Term Care

A certified medical technician (CMT) can also be referred to as a certified medication aide (CMA), a certified registered medication aide, or a qualified medication aide (QMA). A CMT administers prescribed medications to patients and maintains related medical records under immediate supervision. They administer medications using proper dosage, route, timing, and techniques. They also verify the identity of the patient receiving medication and record the name of the drug, the dosage, the time of administration, and any other relevant information on specified forms or records. Additionally, a CMT takes vital signs and observes the resident to detect response to medication and follows all relevant safety guidelines and regulations.

How to Become a Medication Technician/Aide

Becoming a CMT/CMA requires a high school diploma and a Certified Medication Technician (CMT) certification. In Oregon, a CMT/CMA must complete an OSBN-approved medication aide training program, pass a competency examination approved by the OSBN, and receive CMA certification before administering medications.
