Agenda topics include:
Employee Engagement Through Connection
Presented by Erica Knepper, RN, COO, Canyon Wren Consulting
Nurses are often promoted to leadership roles due to their clinical and organizing skills with little preparation for their role as leaders. With the current environment of short staffing, nurses and staff often feel like there is not enough time in a workday to complete all their tasks, often leading to short transaction-based interactions and retention and engagement strategies getting relegated to the back burner. In this session, the presenter will define the similarities and differences between the roles of clinician and leader and how to combine the two skill sets. The presenter will offer tools for reframing your messaging to staff to create the engagement and connection needed to keep staff long-term. Both new and seasoned nurses will discover how to hold staff accountable to the highest level of care, while also reinforcing engagement to encourage employee commitment and growth.
When a Resident Says “No”: The Nurse Leader’s Role in the Refusal of Care
Presented by Dr. Michele Carr, RDN, DPM, NWCC, FAPWCA, COS-C, Clinical Support Manager, McKesson
Residents have the right to make informed decisions regarding the care they receive, including refusing that care. When care is refused, the nurse leader is often brought in to discuss and solve any concerns regarding that refusal. Residents may be labeled as “difficult” or “combative.” The nurse leader must have a strong knowledge of how to utilize informed consent and informed refusal, including clear communication with the resident and/or resident’s representative. In this session, the presenter will explore four major reasons why competent residents refuse care and effective communication techniques to promote adherence to care delivery. New and seasoned nurse leaders will practice techniques to overcome obstacles to communication and discover how to share these critical skills with their staff, to assist staff with successful interactions with residents and their representatives.
