GUEST SPEAKER WEBINAR – Thursday, June 2
Music-Assisted Caregiving in Dementia Care: Techniques and Benefits
Presented by Lisa Peterson, Board Certified Music Therapist and Founder of Come On, Let’s Sing!
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm | CEUs 1.5
Class Description
“Music-Assisted Caregiving” will present research, anecdotal rational, and practical tips for using caregiving singing while giving care to those with dementia. Participants will be able to identify benefits of using music throughout the day, know how and when to use music effectively, identify positive responses to the music, identify red flags and know when to stop music, learn how to complete a music assessment and memory bump plan in order to build a song repertoire for each resident, identify their own musical “sweet spot”, gain confidence in using their own voice to sing or hum when giving care, and identify 2-3 songs they can hum or sing with each resident, as needed, and when appropriate. Participants will “take away” so many reasons for using singing during care for those with dementia including 1) higher job satisfaction leading to higher staff retention, 2) increased mutuality and cooperation between staff and residents, 3) more skills to be able to decrease sundowning, 4) improved person-centered care for both the resident and staff, 5) decreased agitation and aggression in residents (and staff), 6) decreased staff burnout, and 7) more FUN!
Upon completion of this webinar, you will:
- Learn what the research has shown to be the benefits of caregiver singing for those with dementia, for both caregiver and resident.
- Learn what the Memory Bump is and how you can use this knowledge to calculate and create a list of person-centered songs to use for yourself and those you care for.
- Experience your own “musicality” and how it can be used as a self-care tool and to increase communication and feelings of safety between yourself and the one you care for.
