Education Session Descriptions:

A Culture of Discipline: Freedom Within a Framework
Presented by Amy Schmidt, CEO, Retirement Connection, Care Availability

In the book Good to Great by Jim Collins, he introduces the concept of “a culture of discipline.” Discipline in this context does not mean punishment or reprimands, but is defined as self-mastery, consistency, and determination. In a culture of discipline, people do not have jobs, they have responsibilities, allowing them to develop critical thinking skills and complete tasks with creativity with established boundaries. In this session, the presenter will explore how nurse leaders can create a framework of clear boundaries to motivate staff and incentivize them to perform to the best of their ability.

Conflict as Catalyst: Leveraging Key Nurse Leadership Concepts Towards Resolution
Presented by Shantelee Jackson, MSN, BSN, Clinical Support Manager, McKesson

Health care, and specifically long-term care, is a field in which employees spend most of their time interacting with other people. Effective communication strategies begin with self awareness and emotional intelligence allowing leaders to navigate difficult, yet important, conversations. In this session, the presenter will discuss these vital skills, emphasizing conflict resolution and creating an environment of emotional safety in the workplace. Audience members will discover techniques for navigating through crucial conversations with empathy for others and self.

Train to Retain: Creating a Culture Which Embraces New Employees
Presented by Cynthia McDaniel, MSN, CEO, ElderWise

It is essential that staff feel valued, supported, and integrated into the fabric of your organization from day one. Fostering a workplace environment that embraces new employees and nurtures existing talent through effective training techniques, setting up impactful mentorship programs, and coaching strategies will lead to higher retention, engagement, and quality. In this session, the presenter will explore key aspects of setting up effective training methodologies, coaching and mentorship, both new and seasoned employees will be given the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
